A Company Secretary (CS) is a professional course that equips students with a unique set of skills to handle the legal and administrative aspects of corporates. A CS professional has a multi-disciplinary knowledge and has a high degree of power, position and responsibilities. The new Companies Act (2013) makes it mandatory for stipulated companies to appoint a full-time Company Secretary. This ensures job security for CS professionals and is one of the reasons behind the high demand of the CS course.
The Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) conducts the CS program in India. After students complete Class 12 any discipline (excluding fine arts), they can enroll in the CS program conducted through distance mode in three stages: CS-Foundation (eight-month), CS-Executive and CS-Professional. Graduates in any discipline (excluding fine arts) can directly go for the CS-Executive and CS-Professional course. After successful completion of the CS course, students need to complete 16 months of on-job training in a company or under a practicing CS.
